5 August 2014
On Monday night, August 4th, Monaro High School hosted a “mini expo” event to give local students the opportunity to explore and discuss subject choices and consider possible pathways available to them beyond year ten.
Cooma Universities Centre manager, Zoe Dawson, attended the evening to represent the new option to students of staying locally in Cooma and studying a University degree. Previously, post high school university options for students entailed moving away to a university campus or attempting to complete a distance learning degree at home in relative isolation.
The Cooma Universities Centre aims to change all of this. From 2015 the Centre hopes to offer University degrees from various institutes to be delivered via supported learning (a combination of distance study and face to face tutorials) in Cooma. They are currently in negotiations with two Australian Universities to offer degrees in Education and Business/Tourism.
Also attending the HSC information evening were representatives from Canberra University, Charles Sturt University and The Australian Catholic University. Carolyn Ewart from TAFE was there to discuss TVET options with students and a representative from The Australian Business Apprentice Centre was also there to discuss future career options with students.
