The Cooma Universities Centre (CUC) is celebrating its second birthday and more importantly some significant achievements since opening on 6 March 2013.
CUC Manager Zoe Dawson moved to Cooma to take on the position and open the doors of the centre and two years on she is delighted with where CUC is today. ‘When we opened CUC we hoped that the community would embrace the centre; recognise the opportunities it provides and most of all we wanted people to use the facilities and access the resources’, says Zoe ‘I think it is safe to say that this has all happened and it is wonderful to see the benefits of the CUC in our community.’
Over the past two years the significant achievements of the CUC include:
- 118 local students enrol in the centre;
- The introduction of two full degrees allowing local students to complete a degree from Cooma;
- Some of the students who started when the centre opened have now graduated;
- Now operating independently as an association with an independent Board of Directors; and
- Gaining significant state and national attention as a model for regional tertiary education.
Local students can now study a Bachelor of Education – Early Childhood or Primary in partnership with CQUniversity or a full Degree in Business Studies with options for majors in Events and Tourism through the University of Canberra. ‘Introducing the full degrees this year is certainly a major step for CUC’, says Chairman Duncan Taylor. ‘The first students have just started and we are all very happy to see this become a reality.’
Snowy Hydro and the Cooma Monaro Shire Council had the vision and were the driving forces behind the establishment of the CUC and these organisations continue to be supporters. Our community is very fortunate to have this opportunity and facility.
